Role of the supervisory authority

Each Member State must establish at least one supervisory authority. Each supervisory authority will, among others:

  • monitor and enforce the application of the GDPR
  • promote public awareness and understanding of risks, rules, safeguards and rights
  • advise national parliament, government and other institutions or bodies
  • promote the awareness of controllers and processors of their GDPR obligations
  • handle complaints lodged by a data subject
  • co-operate with other supervisory authorities
  • conduct investigations
